Check your local laws. Pretty sure it's not even legal.
I would think it is illegal as well. The airbags are the biggest concern. Children are always safest in the back.
The air bag will turn off on the passenger seat if you put a dictionary on top and it will sense the light weight.

Anyone know what the weight is that turns it off? My dogs can be in the front seat and the light for 'airbag off' doesn't turn on ...
I can barely lean over putting my hand in the seat and the light will go on.
It goes on at ~3 pounds.
It shuts off at 40 pounds.
Here in the state of TN says

Not Permissible: Sorry, no can do. State law says it's not allowed. (Except >5ft)

the state of TN is strict, it is illegal if the car has rear seats, and the child is less than 5ft tall and less than 9 or 10 years old, you can get a ticket for child endangerment.

it is okay on a truck because it doesn't have rear seats. IMO I don't see a problem if the car has the air bag sensors... but government regulates to have power over people in some cases and this is one of them j/K!!! but Hey... you never know, there's always that small chance the air bag sensor could malfunction and deploy the airbag in the event of an accident so you just have to be extra careful.
