Oil Change Question

I planned to get my oil changed today at Costco but they are booked solid for the day. They do not take apt's and it's first come first served. People were waiting there an hour before they even opened this morning.

So we stopped at a different place that does oil changes and the guy working their said my car needs a special filter or something; and that it would be about $60 from there. The dealership charges $50 for the oil change and Costco is $20.

Where do you get your oil changed? What does an oil change for our cars require. I told my dad that this car cannot possibly cost more to do an oil change on than my brother's BMW. This is not a high end car so I don't understand what special filters/oil he is talking about.

If I wanted to do an oil change myself what would I require so that I know when I go somewhere for an oil change what they should be doing.

Thanks for your help.

Read my howto and you will see exactly what is needed and what is involved. The only difference is you need more oil then I since I have the 1.6L. Other then that it's exactly the same, even the oil filter is the same.

I say do it yourself :).

So what would I buy just the oil filter and oil?

If the oil was on sale here then it would be worth it to do it myself, otherwise it's cheaper to get it done at Costco.

Plus I can't jack the car up by myself; so my dad would have to be home to help me.

Yes. You can also buy the drain plug washer but you don't have to unless your plug is leaking.

You may need an oil filter wrench if the person before you put the filter on too tight or it's been a long time since your last oil change.
Ok so we went to the dealership and bought the oil filter for $8.99 (total with tax) and then stopped at Canadian Tire to buy the oil for $11.54 (with taxes and environmental fee).

Total for the oil change was $20.53

My dad just changed it all for me.

Not bad at all! Personally I would have gone with a different filter. The OEM is sub par. Go with Wix or Napa gold. They are cheaper and made much better.
All the filters at Canadian Tire were either the same or more than the OEM filter. So we just passed by Nissan and bought the filter from them.
Oh and thank you for your help and quick response !!!!

We had a feeling the one guy had no clue what he was talking about. There is no way my oil changes should cost more than my brother's.
You should always change the crush washer every oil change. Can't count on it not leaking once you've used it over again.
I'm sure my dad would have changed it if it needed to be changed.

I'm just glad it's done and at a reasonable cost. Cheaper than the dealership ...
i get mine done usually at the dealership and it costs me no more than $25
Nic: You are so lucky. I was telling my dad how much cheaper it is for you guys down there :( My dealership is $49 with tax.

I'm lucky that my dad can do it for me though, so it only cost me $20 for the supplies.
I think the other guy just wanted to see if he could rip you off. There's no special filter required; just an oil filter and oil. So far I've had all my oil changes done at the Nissan Dealership, but that will change once the warm weather hits.

What dealership do you go to ? How much do they charge you?

Mine is the Hamilton one (Plaza) and they wanted $49. Too much for an oil change. My dad called them and asked what filter and oil they used and they said its just the small filter from them and 5W-30. So we bought the filter from them and the oil at CT, and my dad changed it. The dealership charges too much $ for an oil change.
i've used the copper washers on my previous car 3x over, just make sure surfaces are clean. but best to change at every oil change for the low cost.

Yes my dad cleaned everything ...

He knows what he's doing; I don't. LOL
The dealer charges me $26 for my oil change, and they use synthetic blend.
With my Civic, I'd always buy the 1L 12pack of Shell oil at Costco when it goes on sale for $30, lasts me a good year, then a Fram oil filter from Walmart for $5. So in the year 4 oil changes cost me $50 :cornut:
wow rip off report that mechanic to BBB or something 60 dollars for a filter lol. here is a link to some oil filter reviews http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw/oilfilterstudy/oilfilters.html
Versa S 2009: That is so cheap. I'm tempted to one day when I'm in Buffalo just stop at a Nissan and get the oil change done there. Our money is pretty much at par.

Aaron: I'll have to get my dad to check at Costco next time he's there. He needs the oil for his cars too, so might be a worthwhile investment to get it from there.
