poor gas mileage?

52727 Views 45 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Bob in MA
so i've noticed more and more lately that my v seems to eat up a lot of gas, and quickly. probably happened around the time i had some issues with my o2 sensor. but its causing me some concern now.

was wondering what i could do myself before having to take my v in for some diagnostics or even some routine maintenance

any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated :)

I've also included a little picture of a v gas gauge and will explain an example of my concern. My gas runs low (bottom red line) and I fill up (to about the top red line) and drive for lets say around 100km (62miles) and my gas dips down to the half way mark which to me is pretty darn quick. Unless im looking at this wrong. If anyone can quell my concerns that would be great ;)

I use 89 on the versa also but it gets 360 miles.

You might want to change to 87 octane then
I had a Subaru Legacy L none turbo and 87 gave me 275 miles [it had smaller fuel tank] and when I put 89 just to see, 220 something. it was a 97 with 240,000 miles on

but if you do down grade to 87 and still can't get more than 300 miles,
then the fuel type is not the issue.
did you install a cold air intake or anything?
Its all stock except audio. Ill have to try that next. ive got about a lil over half a tank, and im at 140 miles.
is 140 city miles or both highway and city?
do you use a full tank per week. I know I do, that's why I have 76K miles on and I do a lot of high way driving. at least 20 miles one way
I also have a 6spd.
do you drive with the AC on?
Let us know if you notice a change (improvement) in your MPGS when you change your in-cabin filter. I changed mine last year (I think in the spring); so I will change it again this year; but my mileage is always pretty consistent. I wish I did more highway driving to get better mileage ...
I'm not making the connection between the cabin filter and mileage. The engine air filter will have an impact however.

That was 130 city, and 10 highway. Ive got about 180 miles now, and it just crept under half a tank that quick. It was city again. I fill up about every 2wks. I have AT trans, and I hardly use the AC. Right now it's heat, and summer is normally windows down.
Just a little curious are you filling up the tank to a full tank or are you only filling up to 3/4 of a full tank? (going off the pic you attached.) Best way to see if you are actually figuring you fuel use correctly is to fill the tank up full and the run till fuel light comes on and fill it up again a couple of times. then take and avg of all tanks to get your correct mpg's for a full tank i can avg between 250-350 miles per tank depending upon traffic .

Also how much stuff are you hauling around inside the V with you?
btw just to note I do have a cold air intake.. just a note from an earlier post

so the last while i've filled up the tank full and driven it down to almost empty (did not drive it till the gas light comes on, im just paranoid i'd stall somewhere lol)

i've driven 400-460kms or 248-285 miles for a full tank of gas
im thinking thats pretty damn good, and maybe this whole thread was started cause im just super paranoid my car is messed up lol..

any thoughts on the mileage i got from those two tanks of gas?
Thats pretty good! During the winter I get around 400-430 kms out of a full tank of gas. I almost always drive it till the gas light comes on. During the summer I can get up to 500-560 kms.

Aren't you a 5 speed? Im still getting 500 to a tank.

No CVT 1.8L. I thought I would be getting more as well, but I think the roof racks I have might be causing the lower gas mileage

Lol oh man, how much does it weigh? Even with the fairing, there must be some drag.
i wish i would get 500 + kms per tank

i will test that when the weather gets warmer

Even with my CAI, I can manage a 540km tank in the summer, thats when the fuel light turns on. I've stretched it to 600 on some occasions.
Hi to all, Two thoughts while reading the symptoms, Did you have an oil change before the mileage dropped? Possibly wrong oil was used, I think you said dlr does changes. A/C use, at some point, the A/C comes on with the defrost, or in my S when I switch from defrost to heat. (I'm new, 850 miles on it) The A/c may be staying on, although the light should be lit in the button.

I've noticed that the odor or fumes coming out of the tail pipe don't smell anything like fumes from other seasons. Fuel not supposed to be any more than 10% alcohol. Does your fuel have more, or higher limits of alcohol? I'm not up on Canadian gas.

During winter, gas is loaded with more antifreeze detergent and ethanol. Supposedly to help combustion in -45C conditions, cause thats what it's been tested in. It burns a lot more than summer gas, since it has no antifreeze and less ethanol. The other factors include longer warm up which uses more fuel and the A/C running with the heating and defrost system, whether or not you turn the A/C switch on, its always running.

Don't really remember when the drop in mileage started, it happened a while back and didnt really think much of it, thought maybe i was driving differently or that it was normal, but after a long period of it then i thought something was wrong.

and im still getting good mileage out of my v right now, maybe something else is up and could be causing problems.

and btw i just changed my oil to synthetic from the regular oil that is provided at shops

and i dont think there are any unusual odors coming from my tail pipe, but if there was what could that be?
i pick up my 07 s cvt tomorrow what kind of milage should i expect.i commute 50 km each way all hwy.

Congrats on new purchase! Welcome:D Should get pretty good mpgs, the CVT revs lower on the highway than the stick. Best mpg around 70km/h:( The Scangauge folk could give you a more accurate figure. You will see a noticable difference between 105 and 125km/h!:( I drive about 90% QEW/403 and rural roads. I don't wear out the floor beneath the gas like I used to, so I'm averaging about 41mpg since summer tires on this year [3 fillups]. Welcome! 08v
I bought my Versa in Montreal, drove it around mtl to my moms house, then to ottawa to get my e-test and safety (drove around in ottawa to get that done) and then drove it to where the 416 meets the 401 that was about 350 KM and took 25 litres

(350 km) / (25 litres) = 7.14285714 l/100km = 32.9300417 miles per US gallon

Then from the esso where the 416 and 401 meet to my house (filled up to the top and then to the top the next morning where I live was 27 litres) sure I drove at 107KM/h the whole time but I killed it on gas savings in my opinion
(408 km) / (27 litres) = 6.61764706 l/100km = 35.543537 miles per US gallon

I am hoping I will be able to make it to Montreal on one tank, not sure if that is a pipe dream, right now if I fill up in Oshawa I can make it there on a tank in my fiancees yaris, in my old diesel golf 5 spd I use to be able to fill up at home, and get to Montreal with just over a quarter tank left :O

Not sure if I am lucky or if it was because it was all highway, or the way I drove it (in the city always keeping the revs low and got lucky with no real traffic) but is myne too good?

I notice in the city now it's not as good but havent calculated it on my last fillup.

jacl3 that's pretty good! Kinda shocking how the vw diesels really lose mpgs above 130km/h eh? Sometimes it's hard to keep the speed down. When i was in college, one Monday morning, i made it from Ottawa to Mohawk College in Hamilton in 4.5 hours. Was half hour late for class:( That was before automatic suspensions and impoundment at 50k over limit. That was also my K car whose speedometer stopped at 130. ???
In Versa, should go over 600km per tank highway without much effort:)
Bought my first Nissan on 11-11-11, a 2012 Versa with a promise of great gas mileage.
The problem is that brand new with just over 1,000 miles and will on get 33.3.
That's a long way from the 40 plus it was suppose to get.

What should I do?

Are other people having the same problem?

Should I take the matter to small claims court?

Thanks in advance for suggestions.

Tim
