Replacing the Brake Tube

3770 Views 12 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  thx1138guy
I was trying to install the steel braided brake line on the right front brake but I ended up rounding off the flare nut. I followed the tube and found out that it is connected to the ABS actuator. Is it possible that I can replace the brake tube by myself? Or I need to bring it to a shop to do it? Thank you in advance!

If you anticipate working on brake systems any more than once, i'd get a set of flare nut/line wrenches. A small set containing the most common sizes isn't too bad, and they go on sale once in a while at some places. Or else you'll keep rounding them off. I too learned the hard way when i was starting out. Flare nut wrenches get those out like butter compared to regular wrenches.

I would say you'll be fine just replacing that line yourself then bleed as usual. The way that line is oriented (up), you won't have a problem with air in the ABS module. You only get in trouble and need to take it to a shop when you have air inside that module, but unless either the system was drained for a while or you install a new module that is unlikely. How do you plan to get that nut out?

The one connected to the module is still in good shape so I will unscrew that side first and then cut off the side that is connected to the brake line. Will the air be able to get inside the module if I do it this way?
You'll be fine. Just bleed as normal.
Dont replace the whole line!!! Only cut the flair off put a new fitting on then flair it again it will take some tweaking to get everything beck together but a lot easier than making a new line.
I don't think he has a flaring kit.
you can rent one from autozone

Why can't I replace it?
He's just saying it would be cheaper to cut the line to get the nut off, put a new nut on then re flare it.

Most of the time they dont have pre fabbed brake lines at parts stores, they have tubes you have to form yourself and cut and flair one end yourself. So probably only the dealer would have that. So $$$ for a 5$ fix

But I don't know what kind of flare nut it is
Take it off and look it should either be 1/8 or 3/16 NPT depending on the size of the brake line. Most pipe threads are NPT. Just get one for a flared fitting

There are british standar pipe threads but its probably not that as its not old and euro/japanese
Old thread, I know, but it was very helpful to me so that I could determine where the brake line was routed. My wife hit a curb at high speed which bent the steel wheel, broke the strut and sway bar link, and the broke the brake line on our 2010 Versa S hatchback. I went to a used auto parts pull your own part place today and removed the brake line from one of the cars on the lot. It will be a perfect match and luckily the shortest brake line on the car! I also removed the strut and sway bar link from the car. I also bought a steel wheel from them as well. So much thanks to the OP for the post.
