so nissan tells me that i need an O2 sensor, that my exhaust system is rubbing against some wires and has somehow shorted it out causing the "service engine soon" light to come on, and fml it costs like 300 something to get a new one?

anyone know where i can get one for cheaper?

update:

so i took my car to the muffler shop i got my catback installed in. the showed me that the O2 sensor, which is pre-cat, was rubbing a bit on the shield which the wires now show a bit of silver which could have caused it to ground and in which case causing the service engine light to come on.

Tried to fight nissan about it, they told me that the O2 sensor is pushed upwards and isnt straight like its supposed to be in its factory condition. So therefore in my words im SOL

Now i have to buy a new O2 sensor which on the site APLPIX referred me to is gonna cost me just over $100. So all together with nissan fees + getting a new O2 sensor and having it installed will cost me probably around $300ish :(

just redo the wires on your O2 sensor. Is the sensor shorted out or was a wire grounding out on the shield? You may get away with just fixing the sensor you have there. It would cost you nothing but some solder and shrink tubing.

well i think its shorted out, seeing as the guy at the muffler shop cleared the check engine light error, and pushed the wires down more so then they were (even tho it wasnt touching the shield at all at that point) and the light came back on again a while after while i was driving home. so i just ordered a new sensor

the check engine light will stay on for awhile after you correct the gas cap problem. just keep driving it for about a week or so, if it doesnt go off run by somewhere with a decent scan tool and have them check the code. my gf has a bad habit of this but luckily i have access to a 4k$ motis scan tool at work lol. also something to keep in mind, a modification does not void the warranty of the car, only the part you modded. now when you get into internal engine they you have a fight on your hands, but nothing you've done will have voided a warranty, i generally work hand in hand with some dealerships and have made some friends in the parts and service areas. so no worries give it about a week or so and see if the light goes off, or just run it by a parts place with a scan tool.

I like www.sparkplugs.com site. Very useful and had good O2 sensors.

I say buy the sensor and put it in yourself. It's a matter of unscrewing one and screwing the other back in. I doubt it's been rusted on at this point as our cars are fairly new.

Don't go to a shop. Spend $30 on some ramps. The shop will charge you way more then that. Plus now you will have ramps that makes many other tasks much easier. I don't know what I would do without mine. I love them.

The code pulling procedure nicknamed "the peddle dance" is extremely useful. I always use a stopwatch to get the seven second pause exactly the right time. I can usually pull the code on the second or third try.
I've also used the peddle dance. worked quite well, lol but I didn't have a stopwatch. 1 mississippi 2 mississippi worked for me. about 2-3 attempts as well
