should I get a TomTom Nav?

Go to tigerdirect.com they have a whole bunch there, for cheap too.

For some reason a lot of people don't like TomToms. But As long as they do their job correctly, I don't see why not! If you want other considerations I'd look at Magellan and Garmin as well. All of them are quality GPS units.

As for myself I am gonna save up and buy me a Navigation head unit at some point in the future

I have had multiple gps's. I first had a garmin, which was ok, but it was an old one so it didn't really do much. I've also had more recent models of tomtom and magellan. I like the tomtom better than the magellan. Sometimes the magellan would send me down random old dirt roads that really dont fully exist anymore and the features were setup weirdly so it was hard to use. The tomtom was simple and always gave me good directions. I've also noticed that the magellan takes FOREVER to recalculate a route, which isn't bad if you're on the highway, but if you're in the city, by the time it recalculates and ells you to take the next right, you're already past the turn. Both the magellan and tomtom got the job done, but I prefer the tomtom.

I've had my Garmin nuvi 205 for over 4 years now with no problems. It's a simple unit with 3.5" screen. I even got a mount for my motorcycle on the handle bars. One day going to school, riding my bike, the gps was too close to my tank bag and when i took a left hand turn at a light doing about 20 mph it fell off and bounced in the road. Looked in my mirror to see it bouncing. Turned around and when i got back to the intersection a lady stopped at the red light picked it up and gave it to me. Only a few minor scratches to the case but still works like new. Would highly recommend Garmin.

I have a garmin nuvi and it works great the maps are a few years out of date now and it has takin me on a dirt road in the middle of a field before... but I still like it and its easy to use.

Buy one with lifetime free maps. Sometimes the Garmin 40LM and 50LM go on sale for very good prices. At XMAS I bought 3 40LM at $89 each rather than $149 MSRP. The more features the GPS has, the more time it may take to recalculate and you may miss your turns in a city as mentioned in an earlier post.

Unless you don't have a smartphone, don't bother with the navi systems. Save the money and get yourself a keymap book and with what is leftover take your girl/guy out to dinner. Most people that have had navigation systems complain of getting lost with them or the maps being out of date. If that is the case, just use the free GPS system that comes with most smartphones. I have an android phone with Virgin mobile and it works very well. I have not gotten lost using it.

x2 I have my iphone and use the maps app, it has never led me wrong.

I do have a TomTom, just a basic one, a couple years old now. It has also never led my astray. I don't use it often though. The reason I have it, is I live about 30 minutes from the border to the states, so I go over fairly often, and have used it a few times over there when I would have been owned by roaming data charges. It was good on my road trip to my cousins wedding in Wisconsin last summer! Just punch in the address and go! My parents also drove down and were led astray by the nav in their then 2 week old Subaru Outback, and by their top of the line Garmin lol.

Consider the Garmin 40LM. ( life time maps) A super feature is "lane assist" which gives you a split screen on the highway for exits and travel lanes. The Garmin seems to always knows what side of the road your destination is located. The TomTom that I had never gave me a clue as to what side of the road my destination was on.

I use a Tom Tom 150. It works well. I prefer using the Waze app on my phone.

Got TomTom last year. Also used Garmin 205 and 255w. Prefer Garmin just for familiarity. Wife also just got nav on new cell phone Samsung w Android but haven't used it yet.
If you can borrow TomTom, that would be a big consideration for me:thumb2:

I bought a Magellan GPS about 2-3 years ago, leave it in my car all the time. No one has ever tried to steal it, and the heat/cold has never affected it. I like it because it speaks the street names. It doesn't have lane assist, but it was well worth the $. My dad's Tom Tom is about 4-5 years old and doesn't work nearly as well as the Magellan I purchased.
