Don't know how I hadn't yet noticed this, but on my daughter's new-to-her 2010 Versa S there's a playing card sized panel behind the passenger visor. When removed, the resulting hole in the headliner reveals a white electrical plug.

I've tried searching for key words, and have yet to find a related post on here.

Does anyone know the what/why behind this design 'feature'?

Thanks

behind that panel, the plug you see is the connection between one of the main harnesses that runs along the passenger A pillar and the harness for the dome lamp in the middle of car.
If you disconnect that you'll see that the dome lamp doesn't work anymore.

I used that small panel opening to access the plug and wire my own OEM roof center console.

That panel lets you access that connection.
