I never watched it, no need.

There is no such thing as a roof design that protects 100% from head injury. ANY vehicle. Look inside them with headliner removed, most of the roof is only .040" thick steel sheet between head and anything that impinges on the roof that misses any crossover braces.

If people think otherwise they need to stop driving on the roads or get a tank. And surprise, there are many ways to get killed inside those too. If fearful of getting out of bed then stay there, life has risk.

There is NO right or wrong to a lawyer, only plastic 'facts' to twist around to fit his need alone.

I want to see them take a versa top half like they had, weld a continuous bead along the spliced spot welded parts, then re-do the test and see if it helps. Generally speaking, it is what it is and it was tested and passed as good enough for general use through normal channels so I'm not really worried, but if somebody demonstrated that you could pull down your headliner and do some welding to make that junction stronger and put it back together and see a noticeable improvement in his test then I'd consider it. But like amc49 said nothing is going to be totally protective of all possible crash scenarios.

Solid welding at crossbraces would help of course but the roof is an appearance area and spot welds greatly lower the need for extra bodywork to clean it up.

Some 70-80% of the expanse of roof over your head will be single layer sheet metal like I said unless you have moonroof to strengthen it up more with added bracing.

I used to gut cars for racing; you see the roofs as super weak on all of them.

Out of curiosity I watched it. Of course he used a Volvo, a more expensive car that has touted its' safety record for centuries over other brands. Why they fully weld there. I would be curious to see the underside of the roof to compare the two front crossmembers, obvious differences there. Differences you choose to pay for or not when buying a car. Boron steel is nothing special, the Nissan likely uses HSS steel which is stronger but if not utilized in a full rock solid robust way it does not matter what steel is used there. He used the moonroof as a roof stiffener and knew it, but claims it was to test 'if the glass would break', comparing apples to oranges there, the two car roofs cannot be compared. What lawyers do best, twist facts around. Client rides in a Nissan but wants Volvo protection, see any issue there?

Yeah, they made a car that surpassed the test way back then, they also made Ford Pintos, look those up for the safety record there. I'd dare him to use a CURRENT Volvo, they have dropped in crash protection too. The car was picked for the strongest one at the roof they could get and then unfairly compared and what they do.

Cheap crackerbox cars ALWAYS give up some safety to lower the price and to help the overall vehicle production hit CAFE standards, one either gets that or they don't.

And tell me what % of wrecks involve objects from higher up off the ground striking up high like that? The numbers will be way low and why they risk it.

I couldn't finish watching the video. Lawyers just piss me off. So instead of going after the person that caused this accident they go after a larger corporation. Lawyers always follow the money. I live one town North of where this occurred. I remember this crash well. Sad incident but makes me hate lawyers even more.

Yeah, Ive heard that before about if car roofs were stronger, or pillars that support the roof. Ive also heard if the car was 2 inches wider, etc, etc.

I too have no use for lawyers...............until I need one. Even then everything they do is highly suspect. My wife's ex was one and over the long years waiting for a child to get to 18 years of age I learned lots about how self-absorbed/feckless they can be. A lawyer and a gun in the same room and I'm in potential trouble.

To hear how they care so much about the common man, well, I have to stuff my fingers in my ears. Until they touch each other inside my brain.

I wouldnt worry about our cars. That test at the end was not a fair comparison. They need to test 2 similar equipped vehicles as the oem sunroof requires more bulk in the roof to support it vs a car without a sunroof and roof rack for that matter.

Put it in proper perspective.......................if you have to worry about being killed by another person's body slamming into your car regardless of the details, then you got a whole long whopping list of things ahead of that to worry about.................

If only the lawyers could sue God for the difference 10 or 15 seconds could make...................they happily would.
