I think we need more information to answer your question like, what kind of car do you have? What was the OEM tire size that came with the car? Since you mentioned 17", I assume you are talking about mounting the tire on an aftermarket wheel, if so what is the wheel width and offset? Are you willing to have an error on your speedometer/odometer? Is your intention to put in the widest possible tire on the car?
There are probably quite a few treads that discussed what's the largest tire they can fit without rubbing the fender wells which also depends if the car is lowered or not.
Sorry, non OEM size tires are never a simple yes or no question.
