torn between 2 computers, need help!

Hey guys, I'm torn between a 13.3 apple, with backlit keyboard, 4gb memory, 500gb hard drive, i5 processor, 7 hr battery, bluetooth 2.1, intel 4000 graphics or a dell 15R special edition 15.4", i7 processor, 8gb memory, 750gb hard drive, backlit keyboard, facial recongnition, 1yr protect and damage plan, 10hr battery, bluetooth 4.0, wireless display, 2gb graphics card. Both are about $1,100. I have had 2 dells, both been great, no issues. Apples are the best, but my dad and gf both had to take there apples back for warrenty issues. I'm leaning on the dell, but would like input.

I may be a little biased, but i would be against buying the apple.

It is quite obvious the huge price increase in apple products. The dell has the better graphics card, processor, more ram and larger hard drive. it seems like a pretty straight forward decision.

I am a gamer, which probably sways my judgement. Apple's operating system is nice, and it is straight forward and works nearly 100% of the time. Windows is forever plagued with issues.

However, there is lots you can do with windows, and the problems come from letting anyone create an exe file and anyone can run it.

Apples software has a lot of limitations that way, however it decreases the issues, because of apple approved programs will be run on their software.

I would say that if you are doing any form of music recording or creation, photo editing, or video editing, the mac is the way to go. It has lots of programs and free features that are built in.

Windows is the better choice for anything else. As I said above you are getting a far more powerful computer hardware wise from the dell, for the same price as the mac.

The only question I would also look at is the screen resolution. With the 2gig graphics card I would imagine the dell has a 1920x1080 res, at least. However if it is a new macbook pro you have the retina display.

In the end it really depends on what you want to do with it. I would pick the windows laptop.

Well I feel the same way about apple, and its a straight forward answer yes. I don't plan to do any editing. I just wanted another 2 cents from someone else. I love windows 7, and honestly I don't have any problems. Plus my school classes are about windows and lynix, so I figured windows would be best, but just wanted to hear peoples opinions, thanks. Ill have to look into the screen,

I've had my MacBook since 2008, still runs. Just rebooted it a couple weeks ago. Never had any issues. If I bought it again I wouldn't buy the extended warranty. I never used it.

I only have apple products (iPhone, iPad, & MacBook), don't think I'd ever buy a pc again. MacBook has lasted me a long time and is still running.

Ya apple makes good quality products. I cannot deny that! I am just a fan of PC

Windows 7 is a good OS.

That was another thing that I thought of after.

Your compatibility with class mates would be higher with a PC most likely. Unless everyone has macs that is. But most peoples flash drives will be formatted to NTFS which is not compatible with Mac, without a reader program. It gets to be a pain to share things between systems. Probably better to have a system that is more widely used.

And as your program is using primarily windows and windows based programs, who wants the stress of having to find mac compatibility. It would most likely end up that you would boot camp you mac and have windows too, if you ended up getting a mac.

I went through 2 pcs in university. Laptops get taken to class daily, and the pcs just couldn't handle the daily abuse. Ended up buying the MacBook and its lasted me a very long time. Now that I'm done university, I barely use it. The iPad gets taken everywhere now. But when I need to upload photos, or download something, the MacBook powers up and works perfectly

I have to agree with you again.

I have a friend with an old MacBook, probably 6 years old now, and he has had to do hardly anything to it and it still runs fine.

It really helps when you only can install certain things on it and it saves you from trying to install some risky business haha.

I am not a huge fan of laptops, I have a desktop that I always use, which is fairly powerful to game and do the majority of my reddit browsing etc.

I just have my grandmas old dell inspiron 6000 that i take to class. It is old and slow, but all i need it to do it type notes and it works for that.

Get the Dell, PC has wider selection of software and better competitive prices.

I. Like the apples for reliablilty, but I bought a dell 17R about a year ago with i5 processor, 500gb, 6gb ram, and I haven't had one problem with it. Super fast, dependible, powems up in seconds everytime. But its too big to lug around with me. So the 15" will be fine. But since my gf and dads apple have been in the shop a couple times, I haven't been too happy with apple. If I spend a grand I want a good one. I know anything can happen, but that's why ill buy 1year of protection and damage protection included in that grand. I do want an apple phone, cause the andriods haven't been good with me. But my 6 year old dell I gave to my grandparents, and it still works great. I bought mom a new 15R last year too, and no issues. I think ill go with the dell, prolly order in a few weeks. I want to be compatible as much as possible too. Thanks guys

Dell is wonderful. I love PC's. My first Dell lasted me 5-6 years with little maintenance.
I just bought another one 2-3 years ago and still running fast with no problems.
Agreed, it will help with all the other PC users with school. Good luck.

I am a bit biased, coming from PC to Mac was, in my opinion, the greatest thing ever. As one person posted, its great for recording and editing music. I use it for mostly for music, internet browsing, and emailing/skype. It works excellent for all those things, and I do occasionally take it to work with me if I'm in the office just because I much prefer its mail program and general layout/os over a PC. I also have an iPhone and iPad so its nice to have them working with my MacBook Pro.

And to be honest, I really like the way it looks lol.

Also, I'd go any PC over Macs, easy to fix, upgrade, and won't hit your pocket like a brick!

The ability to sync all your notes, contacts, photos & music between all your apple products is an awesome feature. I don't even have to plug my phone or iPad into my MacBook. I can sync them all wirelessly

I like the fact that I can sync to my Ipod wirelessly from Itunes, especially when im upstairs, and my ipod is in the jeep outside.

exactly.

They make those features for both platforms.

I agree with the above statement about upgrades and fixing. PC's are easy to unscrew the back to add more ram, or a different HDD or Solid State.

Since everyone is into modding their versas here, why not try to build your own pc. For the same price as the apple or dell you can build your own kick a$$ pc. I ordered from sites like TigerDirect or Newegg, ordered all the parts, motherboard, cpu, cpu cooler, graphics card, case, keyboard, etc., put it all together, and it's still running after four years. I got a quad core processor so it's not outdated, most programs these days hardly utilizes two cores, so I should be good for awhile. Just my input on this matter.

I agree. I mildly mention it on my first post.

I prefer my desktop computer. First built it in 2007, and didn't do any changes with it until this year when I lost my mother board. I then decided to upgrade everything, except my graphics card. Too much money. The other parts I got second hand off my cousin.

Im running a:

AMD Phenom II 6 Core
8GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4890
Primary Drive: 500 GB Western Digital
Secondary: 2 - 1TB Seagates
Case: NZXT Blackline

I like it a lot.

However, if he is looking for a one computer option that is portable to take to classes and what not that building your own really isn't an option.

I built my own this summer as well, after taking a PC Maintenance class for my degree:

Specs:
i3-2120
GA-Z77X-D3H mobo
8gb Vengeance Ram
500gb WD blue
OCZ vertex 4 128gb ssd
8800 GTX from old Dell XPS
Corsair 750W
Corsair 650D case

Cost me about $700 without GPU, gonna be $300 more when I get my GTX 660 Ti
