Trunk latch releasing after depressing brake pedal issue

So I jumped in my car this morning (after problem-free driving yesterday afternoon) to go to work, and I notice that while parked, if I depress the brake pedal and release, the rear hatch latch clicks open, and the hatch sits halfway between closed and open....kind of still in place, but not completely closed.

Also, if the hatch is closed fully and the car is unlocked the release button on the hatch will not open it. I pulled every fuse in the fuse box inside the car before going to work, and examined any I thought would be causing the problem in the 2 panels under the hood this afternoon while grabbing lunch. I also tested the issue with (what I believe is) the brake light wiring right above the pedal disconnected, and then it does not occur.

Has anyone every heard of this problem, or had any similar experience in their travels? I have searched online and found comments relating to faulty ground wires with similar hatch release button issues, but nothing has provided a complete answer. My car is a 2007, 1.8L, MT, HB. If anyone can lend some advice, it would be greatly appreciated!!! I have an appointment with my mechanic on Friday, but if I can resolve the issue myself before hand that would be even better.

Thanks!
Craig

You indicated the car was going into the shop last Friday. Did you ever get a diagnosis of the problem?

I didn't have a clue what to even suggest other than a short somewhere.
After I drove home and let it sit over night, the issue resolved without any additional intervention. I cancelled the appointment and advised my mechanic that we could give the car a more full inspection at the next schedule maintenance date, which should be in a few weeks. If he finds anything that could possibly point to a problem that may have triggered it, I can update here.

Since that point up to now the issue has not recurred. It was quite weird, as it seems no one I have talked to about it has ever heard of this type of issue in the past.
Had same problem

Its water getting into one of the rear light assemblies. I have had the same problem and at the same time noticed fogging in the light assembly. I assume that the water gets into the wiring and creates that issue.
