I know part of it has to do with the EPA. But why can't paint be thicker then a sheet of paper? Has it allways been thin?

With all the road debris and junk that hits our cars we should be able to get better paint jobs.
Doesn't a one color maaco paint job cost like $250? Im sure they can put on a nice thick coat..
