According to Honda and Nissan you can mix them. The blue contains silica with makes it ph neutral.

Bigger question is: Why did you need to put more coolant in the car...........leak?

I had a honda and had to deal with that. I found its all ok. The green stuff is 3 years life where as the red or blue is 5 year then both need replacing as the ph wanes and corrosion starts.

There is pretty much zero difference in all engines made that would affect the coolant type. Past that best to use the type specced for the car, but I personally use old school green as it lasts longer than said and it also protects instantly where many more enviro friendly ones do that by taking time (up to 6 months, of course they WON'T tell you THAT part) to come up to full corrosion protection. Myself, I don't need corrosion to protect the planet.

Different coolant types and colors are simply one other gimmick to steer you to the dealers to get what you are firmly convinced (they told you didn't they?) you have to at whopping high prices. It's bunk.

Just don't MIX different coolants, that can burn you bigtime. Some are incompatible with others and can glue your entire system up. If you change be sure and do a thorough clean water flush first.

amc, what brand? I used walmart as I was unemployed and on a budget. Found rust and discoloration early on a year later when I checked water level. I flushed it before hand and used 50/50 as I have minerals in my tap water. Later I had a job and flushed it a second time and use Peak 50/50. So far its still fluorescent green and its been 3 years.

The Walmart universal stuff is the longlife type now and the kind that takes longer to develop corrosion protection. Most kinds that claim to mix with all others are green in color as they do not know what other color to use since all makers starter using their own 'special stuff'. So, more than one 'green' there.

While I love the Walmart price I get the oldschool stuff that O'Reilly sells and I even suspect that, the makers will dilute and substitute stuff all day long to get what they want from profits.

So, do you buy the full strength and bottle water or tap water to cut it or just use 50/50?

I know walmart sells distilled water, but I never see anyone with a bottle of antifreeze and water. I know from the rings on my plumbing fixtures I got minerals so like I said I just buy 50/50 premix.

I NEVER buy pre-mix, it's throwing money away hand over fist. I use no distilled water either and including in batteries. Most of that unless in a severe hard water area is BS. We have rings here too but it takes YEARS, and if you understand water and its' effects on metals of any type you will already know that deposits come when you heat ANY water, even distilled, if it is surrounded by metal. Heat enhances oxidation underwater.

Where were you in science class?

Use the proper 50/50 mixed yourself and no issues.

I also think 50/50 premix is a scheme. They basically sell you a water at the price of an antifreeze. Plus at some winter temperatures you need other proportions, like 55/45 or even 60/40. So I also buy undiluted antifreeze - when I can. For some vehicles I can only buy premix one, they do not sell undiluted (like super long life for Toyota).

However, I do not use a tap water to mix. I buy distilled water in big box stores, about a dollar for a gallon. For what it worth.

It doesn't need a leak to need coolant. All cars pretty much use a slight amount over long periods, the rad caps are nowhere near as leakproof as thought, they vent slightly all the time. That carries air out laden with coolant.
