Hello, my girlfriends 2007 Nissan Versa S has been consuming oil since we have had it over the past year. I just changed the oil on it at the end of December and it is already half way between low and high on the dipstick. I also changed the PCV valve in it hoping it was that, but it hasn’t fixed the problem. The car has just over 91,000 miles on it. Any ideas what the problem is? Running recommended oil type, high mileage full synthetic. Haven’t noticed any bug smoking issues, also haven’t noticed any leaks.

My car has piston slap and started burning oil (248k) miles on it and my dad has been using Engine Restore in it now for almost a year and it made a huge improvement.
What happens with a piston slap is that the piston skirt starts rocking in the cylinder instead of just going straight up and down, which causes the cylinder walls to start to wear away. As the damage to the cylinder wall progresses, the piston rings will start fail, which will affect oil consumption. Many engines can run a long time with this condition, but then you get to a point where oil consumption and performance start to take a hit.
Just wondering if you hear any sounds when you cold start the engine? Nissan had a problem with their engines regarding a piston slap that can cause high oil consumption. If it is a piston slap, you will hear a tapping sound when the engine is first started. If you live in a cold climate, the sound will be loudest from a cold start, and will gradually decrease as the engine warms up. In my 2009 versa, the engine was replaced under warranty with just over 30,000 miles on the car because of this issue. If it is a piston slap, there is not much you can do to fix other than replacing the engine. If I were you, I would stop using the synthetic and use a good grade of regular oil. Good luck!!!
